Trip Overview

Circling the valley of the Melamchi Khola, just 75km north of Kathmandu, the Helambu area offers classic Himalayan foothill landscapes, with plenty of dramatic rises and plummeting descents. However trails are rarely crowded and there are no overbooked flights to worry about at the end of the trek – you can just hop on the bus or jump into a taxi back to Kathmandu. In just one week, you can loop around from Sundarijal to Thimbu, passing mountain viewpoints, alpine meadows, and Buddhist villages. Alternatively, you can tack Helambu onto the end of the Langtang or Gosainkund trek, crossing into Helambu via the high-altitude passes at Laurebina La (4610m) or Ganja La (5106m). Both routes involve steep gains in altitude, so AMS is a serious risk and the passes are snow-covered and dangerous in winter. Earthquake damage was severe on Helambu and buildings collapsed in most villages in the region because of the earthquake on 25/04/2015. Trails and roads were affected by landslides and the status of villages along the Helambu Circuit trek but after three months the route was reopened and now they are perfect for trekking again you will not find it very comfortable hotels for sleep but tea houses are very good and people are very nice. You will have a great time on treks organize by Himalayan snow treks and Expedition we are 24/7 on support for our clients if in case.

THE SHERPAS OF HELAMBU

The tribal people of upper Helambu are often described as Sherpas, but they call themselves Yolmo, after the original name for the Helambu Valley. Like the Sherpas of the Khumbu region, the Yolmo came to Nepal from the Tibetan plateau in the 15th century, settling in Tarke- Ghyang and other villages around the Melamchi Khola. The Yolmo use the cursive Umescript, which is still used for handwritten texts in Tibet, and speak their own language, Yolmo, which is quite different from the Sherpa language of Khumbu.
